The rule base
What one Schengen visa gives you
A Schengen visa — typically issued for up to 90 days of stay in any 180-day window — covers all twenty-nine Schengen states with no internal border checks. You file once, with one document pack, at one consulate: the country of your main destination. UAE citizens do not need it at all under the visa waiver; everyone else residing in the UAE files through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

- Schengen application form, signed, with a 35×45 mm photo taken in the last 6 months
- Passport issued within the last 10 years, valid 3+ months after the planned departure
- UAE residence visa — valid at least 3 months beyond the return date
- Medical travel insurance with €30,000 coverage, valid in all Schengen states
- Detailed day-by-day itinerary with confirmed hotel bookings
- Flight reservation to and from the Schengen area (do not buy tickets before the decision)
- Bank statements for the last 3–6 months showing regular income
- NOC and salary certificate from the UAE employer, or trade licence + audit for owners
Consulates may ask for extras — an audit for business owners, a sponsor letter for families. The core never changes.

Almost every Schengen mission in the UAE runs through VFS Global in Dubai and Abu Dhabi — the calendar is the bottleneck.
day 1–7Assemble the harmonised file
Application form, insurance, itinerary, bookings, bank statements, employer NOC — the pack is the same for all 29 states.
day 1–14Submit and give biometrics
Fingerprints are taken in person every 59 months; eVISA-eligible tourist cases skip the trip for some consulates.
at submissionReceive the decision
The harmonised clock is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 in peak season. Passports return with the visa sticker or a refusal notice with appeal grounds.

Which consulate should I apply to?
The consulate of your main destination — the country of the longest stay or the main purpose of the trip. If the stay is split evenly, file with the country of first entry. Filing with a "convenient" consulate for a trip anchored elsewhere is a classic refusal pattern.
How long does a Schengen visa take in the UAE?
The harmonised decision clock is 15 calendar days from submission, extendable to 45 days in peak season. The real bottleneck is the VFS appointment calendar — book up to 6 months ahead for December, spring holidays and summer trips.
Can I get a multiple-entry visa?
Yes — multiple-entry visas with growing validity (1, 2, 3, up to 5 years) are issued to applicants with a clean Schengen history. First-time applicants typically receive a single-entry or short multi-entry visa matched to the trip.
How does the 90/180 rule work?
The visa allows up to 90 days of stay inside the Schengen area in any rolling 180-day window. Days count across all Schengen states combined, and overstay is recorded in the Visa Information System.
Is travel insurance mandatory?
Yes — medical insurance with at least €30,000 of coverage, valid in all Schengen states for the whole stay. The certificate must be presented at submission.
What if my visa is refused?
The refusal notice lists the grounds and the appeal window. Common UAE-side causes are a vague itinerary, thin bank statements or a mismatch between the chosen consulate and the actual trip plan.
