Hungary visa from the UAE (2026)

This is a Schengen state — the visa, fee and 90/180 rule base is shared. Read the full Schengen guide →

Hungary is the Schengen country UAE residents most often meet twice: first on a C visa for a Budapest trip, later — on a national D visa for work, study or a longer stay. Both are filed through VFS Global in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but the two tracks diverge in fee, documents and processing time, and mixing up their requirements is the most common first-round mistake.

C visa fee (adult)
€90 Schengen rate · child 6–11: €45
D visa fee
€110 national long-stay track
C processing
10–15 days extendable to 45
Stay allowed
90/180 C visa, Schengen-wide; D — by permit

Visas

Who needs this visa

  • UAE citizens are visa-waived for Hungary and the whole Schengen area — this guide is for UAE residents on other passports.
  • Residents of India, Pakistan, Philippines, Egypt, Russia and most non-waiver nationalities need a visa: the C visa for trips up to 90 days, the national D visa for work, study or residence.
  • Waiver-passport holders (UK, US, Canada, Gulf states and others) enter visa-free for short stays; D-track rules still apply to them for long stays.
  • Both tracks are submitted via VFS Global in Dubai and Abu Dhabi; decisions rest with the Hungarian consulate, not with VFS.

Document checklist

Document checklist

  1. Passport valid 3+ months beyond return (C) or covering the planned stay (D), 2 blank pages
  2. Signed application form — the Schengen form for C, the national D form for long stays
  3. 2 photos 35×45 mm on white, recent
  4. Travel medical insurance from €30,000 for C; for D — full-coverage insurance for the permit period
  5. Round-trip flight reservation (C track)
  6. Accommodation: hotels, or a host's invitation with a signed undertaking (C); for D — the employment contract, university acceptance or company registration behind the stay
  7. Bank statements for the last 3 months; for D — proof of income or funding for the stay
  8. Employer NOC or trade licence; for D employees — the signed Hungarian employment contract
  9. Cover letter; D applications add attested documents (apostille/legalisation where required)

Process

How it works

  1. Pick the track honestly

    day 0

A 10-day holiday is C; a two-year Budapest contract is D. Applying on the wrong track wastes the appointment — officers transfer files, not travel plans.

  2. Book VFS

    2–6 weeks ahead

C-track slots follow the tourist seasons; D-track appointments are steadier year-round because work and study do not peak with holidays.

  3. Prepare documents for the track

    1–3 weeks

C files live or die on itinerary coherence; D files on the underlying document set — contract, acceptance or company papers, attested where Hungary requires it.

  4. Submit at VFS with biometrics

    1 day

Fingerprints every 59 months on the C track. D applicants give biometrics as well; family members file in one visit where possible.

  5. Decision

    C: 10–15 · D: varies

C: up to 15 days, extendable to 45. D: national-track timelines are longer and vary with the permit type — plan around months, not weeks, and confirm the current queue at booking.

  6. Check what was issued

    1–3 days

A C sticker shows entries and the 90/180 ceiling; a D visa anchors the residence permit process on arrival in Hungary. They are not interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Hungary C and D visa?

The C visa is the standard Schengen visa: up to 90 days in any 180, tourism and business visits, valid across the zone. The D visa is Hungary's national long-stay visa — it targets people entering for work, study or residence under a Hungarian permit, and its requirements follow the purpose, not the Schengen checklist.

Do UAE citizens need a visa for Hungary?

Not for short stays — UAE passport holders are visa-waived across Schengen. Long stays (employment, study) follow the national D rules regardless of the waiver.

Can I switch from a C visa to a work permit inside Hungary?

No. The C visa does not convert into work authorisation. Employment requires the D track — the contract and permit paperwork are done before you travel, not after arrival on a tourist visa.

Is the D visa the same as a Hungarian residence permit?

The D visa is the entry document that lets you collect the residence permit in Hungary. Residence cards are issued locally after arrival — the visa itself is not the permit.

How long does the Hungary C visa take from Dubai?

Up to 15 calendar days by rule, extendable to 45 in peak periods. Start the VFS appointment search 2–3 months before a high-season trip; off-season, both slots and decisions come faster.
