Visas

Who needs this visa

  • UAE citizens are visa-waived across the Schengen area (since 2022) — this guide is for UAE residents on other passports.
  • Residents of India, Pakistan, Philippines, Egypt, Nigeria, Russia and most other non-waiver passports need a C-type Schengen visa.
  • Applications go through the Bulgarian mission's designated channel in the UAE; the infrastructure is newer than the big missions, so confirm the filing routine.
  • Ski season (December–February) and the Black Sea summer are the peaks.
  • Holders of UK, US, Canadian, Gulf and several other waiver passports enter visa-free for up to 90 days — no application needed.

Process

How it works

  1. Anchor the itinerary

    day 0

The visa is issued by the mission of your main destination — the longest stay or the trip's defining purpose.

  2. Reserve an application slot

    weeks ahead

Appointments are taken via the VFS portal; peak-season calendars fill early, cancellations release new windows.

  3. Assemble the file

    1–2 weeks

Work through the checklist in order and keep every date consistent across bookings, letters and the form.

  4. File and give fingerprints

    1 day

Submission is in person at the visa centre; biometrics repeat only every 59 months.

  5. Wait for the decision

    10–15 days

The statutory window is 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 in peak periods.

  6. Read the sticker before flying

    1–3 days

Check validity, number of entries and stay duration against the approved plan before leaving the centre.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I apply?

You may file up to 6 months before travel. For peak-season trips start at the 3-month mark — the appointment calendar, not the consulate, is the constraint.

How much bank balance do I need to show?

There is no fixed figure. Officers look for a balance consistent with your income and trip length, supported by three months of statements.

Why do Schengen applications get rejected?

The frequent reasons: purpose not convincingly documented, funds inconsistent with the stated itinerary, and applying to the wrong mission for the actual main destination. The refusal letter states the code — fix that gap before reapplying.

Is Bulgaria in Schengen now?

Yes — full accession completed in 2025. The harmonised €90 fee, the 90/180 stay rule and zone-wide validity all apply to new applications.

Does old Bulgarian visa history count for Schengen?

It builds a travel-history picture, but pre-accession Bulgarian visas were national. New applications are assessed under the Schengen framework.

Is Bulgaria cheaper as a trip than the big Schengen destinations?

Typically yes on the ground — and the visa itself costs exactly the same €90 as everywhere else in the zone.
