Who needs this visa

UAE citizens travel to France and the whole Schengen area visa-free — this guide is for residents on other passports.
Residents of India, Pakistan, Philippines, Egypt, Russia and most other non-waiver nationalities need a C-type Schengen visa with France as the main destination.
Waiver-passport holders (UK, US, Canada, Gulf states and others) enter without a visa for stays up to 90 days.
Applications are filed at the VFS centre for your emirate; the French consulate in Dubai covers Dubai and the northern emirates, the embassy in Abu Dhabi covers the capital region.

How it works

Fix the itinerary around France

France must hold the longest night count of the trip, or the trip's single main purpose. A French visa used mainly for Paris with a two-day side trip to Brussels fits the rule; the reverse does not.
Take a VFS appointment
2–4 weeks ahead

Slots open in batches and disappear fast between October and March. Create the VFS account early, then watch for cancellations — a workable slot usually appears within 2–4 weeks.
Assemble the file
1–2 weeks

French missions read the cover letter: trip purpose, dates, funding. Keep every date identical across the form, bookings, NOC and letter.
Submit and give biometrics

In-person submission at VFS with fingerprints (repeatable every 59 months). Family applications are submitted together in one slot group.
Decision window
10–15 days

Up to 15 calendar days by rule, 45 in complex or peak cases. Track status through the VFS portal; the passport returns by courier or pickup.

'Valid for', 'duration of stay' and 'number of entries' decide what you can actually do. France frequently grants multi-entry — note the expiry for the next trip.

Frequently asked questions

Does France really give multi-year Schengen visas?

It is the mission most known for them. Applicants with a clean visa history and consistent travel regularly receive 1-, 2-, 3- or even 5-year multi-entry stickers, with the 90/180 stay rule applying to each half-year regardless of validity.

Do UAE citizens need a visa for France?

No — UAE passport holders are visa-waived across Schengen (90 days per 180). The €90 C visa is for residents travelling on other passports.

How early should I book the France appointment in Dubai?

You may apply up to 6 months before travel. For trips between October and March, start 2–3 months out: the appointment calendar, not the consulate, is the constraint.

What is an Attestation d'Accueil?

A host certificate issued by the French town hall (mairie) where your host lives, required for private stays. It takes the host 2–4 weeks to obtain — ask for it at the planning stage, not the week before the appointment.

Can I use a French visa to enter Spain or Italy first?

Technically the visa is zone-wide, but the issuing rule is the main destination. Entering through another country on a mostly-unused French visa is the pattern officers flag on the next application.

What if my France visa is refused?

The refusal letter states the reason code (funds, purpose, itinerary logic). Fix that specific gap and reapply — or appeal within the stated window, which for France runs two months from the decision.
