Switzerland is Schengen but not the EU — the visa is the same C sticker, while work and residence permits remain purely Swiss and cantonal. For UAE residents it is a business-heavy destination, and files with a clear congress or meeting anchor process smoothly.

Who needs this visa

UAE citizens are visa-waived across the Schengen area (since 2022) — this guide is for UAE residents on other passports.
Residents of India, Pakistan, Philippines, Egypt, Nigeria, Russia and most other non-waiver passports need a C-type Schengen visa.
Applications are submitted via VFS in Dubai and Abu Dhabi; decisions rest with the Swiss missions here.
Demand follows the ski season and the Davos-congress circuit — book around both.
Holders of UK, US, Canadian, Gulf and several other waiver passports enter visa-free for up to 90 days — no application needed.

Book the VFS appointment

Slots are claimed through the VFS booking system; in high season calendars fill weeks ahead. Watch for released cancellations.
Prepare the document file

Collect the checklist in order; keep dates identical across the form, bookings, NOC and cover letter.
Submit in person with biometrics

Fingerprints and a document check at the VFS centre; fingerprints repeat every 59 months.
Consulate decision

Frequently asked questions

Why do Schengen applications get rejected?

The frequent reasons: purpose not convincingly documented, funds inconsistent with the stated itinerary, and applying to the wrong mission for the actual main destination. The refusal letter states the code — fix that gap before reapplying.

Does one refusal affect future applications?

A refusal is not a ban. What matters is whether the next file addresses the stated reason; applicants who correct it regularly receive multi-entry visas afterwards.

Do UAE citizens need a visa for this trip?

No — UAE passport holders are visa-waived across the whole Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180. The €90 C visa applies to residents travelling on other passports.

Does a Swiss Schengen visa allow work in Switzerland?

No. Employment requires a cantonal work permit arranged before travel. The C visa covers meetings, negotiations and comparable short business activity only.

Is the Swiss visa different because Switzerland isn't in the EU?
