Vehicle Sale Power of Attorney in the UAE
Sell a UAE vehicle through an attorney while you are overseas.
Updated September 2026 · market data verified methodology
A vehicle sale power of attorney authorizes a person you trust to sell your car in the UAE when you cannot attend the transfer yourself: sign the sale contract, submit the ownership transfer application at the traffic authority and complete the handover. It is the standard instrument for owners who have already left the country and need the car sold — by a relative, a friend or a dealer — without flying back for the appointment.
Traffic authorities read mandates narrowly: the POA should identify the vehicle and describe the sale it covers. Practice on general versus special mandates differs between emirates — in Dubai the RTA has accepted a general POA for a vehicle sale between close relatives, while in Abu Dhabi a general mandate is not used for asset transfers and a special POA for the transaction is prepared instead. Confirm the current requirement of the emirate where the car is registered before drafting.
Where it is used
Vehicle registration and transfer centres — the RTA in Dubai and the traffic departments of the other emirates
Typical situation
The owner has left the UAE and a relative, friend or dealer completes the sale locally
Language
Registered in Arabic; you approve a bilingual draft beforehand
Term
Until revoked, or until the sale it covers is completed or the stated deadline passes
Who uses this POA
- Owners who have moved out of the UAE and are selling the car before or after leaving
- Residents whose visa status or schedule prevents them from attending the transfer centre in person
- Families arranging the sale of a car belonging to a relative who is abroad
- Owners handing the transaction to a dealer while they are overseas
What the attorney can do
- Sign the vehicle sale agreement and the transfer-of-ownership application within the scope written into the POA
- Represent the principal at the registration or transfer centre and answer procedural questions
- Complete the formal steps the transfer requires — deregistration paperwork, plate return and similar — where the mandate lists them
- Receive the sale proceeds on the principal's behalf, if the mandate says so explicitly
- Hand over the registration card and related documents as part of the completed sale
Limits and practical notes
Check these before drafting — they decide whether an authority accepts your document.
- The mandate should identify the vehicle — make, model and plate or chassis number — and the transaction; a generic document risks refusal at the counter
- General versus special matters: Dubai practice has accepted a general POA for a sale between close relatives, while Abu Dhabi expects a special vehicle-sale mandate; rules differ by emirate, confirm current practice
- Where the vehicle is under finance, the lender's clearance normally comes before ownership can move
- Payment handling should be stated at drafting — receiving proceeds is a separate power, and a mandate silent on it may not be enough
- A POA issued outside the UAE has to be notarized and legalized before the traffic authority will accept it
Documents to prepare
The principal (individual)
- Passport copy of the principal
- Emirates ID and visa page, if the principal is a UAE resident
- Passport details of the appointed attorney
- Vehicle details — make, model, year and plate or chassis number — and, where known, the intended buyer's name
Selling a vehicle from abroad
Owners who have already left the country sell through a representative all the time: the mandate is drafted with the vehicle and the sale described precisely, signed and notarized — and, if issued outside the UAE, legalized so the traffic authority can accept it. The representative then attends the transfer centre in the principal's place and completes the handover without the owner's presence.
Timing and money are the two points to settle early. Registration is tied to the owner's residence status, so plan the sale around visa cancellation dates rather than after them, and agree in advance how the proceeds reach you — a representative should never be holding funds the mandate never authorized him or her to touch.
- Describe the vehicle and the sale explicitly — chassis or plate number, not just 'my car'
- Check whether the emirate of registration wants a special mandate rather than a general one
- Agree the payment route before signing — receiving and transferring proceeds must be written into the scope
Frequently asked questions
Can I sell my car in the UAE while I am abroad?
Yes — this is exactly what a vehicle sale POA is for. A representative you name signs the sale documents and completes the transfer at the traffic authority in your place. The mandate has to be drafted and notarized beforehand, either before you leave the country or from abroad with the proper legalization.
Do I need a special POA, or will a general one work?
It depends on the emirate and on who the attorney is to you. In Dubai, RTA practice has accepted a general POA where the sale is between close relatives; between unrelated parties a special mandate for the transaction is the safe route, and Abu Dhabi expects a special mandate in any case. Practice differs by emirate and is updated, so confirm the current requirement before drafting.
Can the attorney receive the money for me?
Only if the scope says so. Receiving and forwarding the sale proceeds is a separate power, and a mandate that is silent on payment leaves the representative without authority to collect anything on your behalf. State the payment arrangement explicitly at the drafting stage.
What vehicle details go into the POA?
Enough to single the car out: make, model, year and the plate or chassis number. Adding the intended buyer's name where one is already known removes another reason for the counter clerk to question the document.
The car is still under a bank loan — does that change anything?
Yes. The lender holds an interest in the vehicle, and its clearance normally has to be obtained before ownership can be transferred. Settle the finance position first, then complete the sale through the representative.
