US visa for UAE residents (2026)

The UAE is not part of the US Visa Waiver Program, so virtually every UAE resident — Emirati citizens included — needs a B1/B2 visitor visa. The route runs through the DS-160 form, the $185 MRV fee and an in-person interview at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General in Dubai.

Visa type
B1/B2 One visa covers business trips and tourism; there is no ESTA shortcut for UAE passports
MRV fee
$185 Paid online before booking the interview; non-refundable even if the visa is refused
Typical validity
Often 10 years, multiple entry Set by the consular officer and depends on nationality
Stay per visit
Decided at the border A CBP officer usually grants up to 6 months on entry; the visa only allows travel

Process

How it works

  1. Complete the DS-160

    1-2 hours

Fill the online nonimmigrant application carefully — answers must match your documents — and save the confirmation with the barcode.

  2. Pay the MRV fee

    Same day

$185 paid through the official appointment service; the receipt unlocks interview booking.

  3. Book the interview

    Days to months of waiting

Choose Abu Dhabi or Dubai; waiting times run from days to several months depending on the season.

  4. Attend the interview

    1 day

Bring the passport, DS-160 confirmation, photo and ties documents; the officer decides the same day in most cases.

  5. Administrative processing (if any)

    Weeks, case by case

Some cases go into 221(g) review with extra document requests; most approvals are immediate.

  6. Receive the passport

    3-7 days after approval

The passport with the visa is returned by courier to your address in the UAE.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Do UAE citizens need a visa for the USA?

Yes. The UAE is not in the Visa Waiver Program, so Emirati passports need a B1/B2 visa with an interview. There is no ESTA shortcut for any UAE resident, whatever the passport.

I live in Dubai on a different passport — where do I apply?

At the US mission where you reside: the embassy in Abu Dhabi or the consulate in Dubai. Both accept third-country nationals who are UAE residents, so a tourist trip to a 'faster' embassy elsewhere is not a reliable strategy.

How long can I stay in the US on a B1/B2?

The visa validity (often 10 years) is not the stay length. On arrival a CBP officer decides the permitted period, typically up to 6 months. Overstays seriously damage future applications.

Can I renew without an interview?

Some renewals qualify for the interview-waiver (dropbox) route when the previous visa is still valid or expired recently and the category is the same. Eligibility is shown when you book; the rules shift, so check the embassy page as of your application date.

Does the visa guarantee entry?

No. A B1/B2 allows you to travel to a US port of entry; admission and the length of stay are decided by CBP. Carry your NOC, return booking and hotel details in hand luggage.
