VFS Visa Appointments in Dubai: The Complete Booking Guide

Updated 2026-09-16 methodology

Most embassies and consulates in the UAE no longer accept visa applications directly. Instead, they outsource document collection, biometrics and fee payment to VFS Global — a commercial visa-processing partner. Whether you are applying for a Schengen holiday, a Turkish e-visa follow-up or a long-stay permit, your in-person steps almost always happen at a VFS centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, not at the embassy itself.

This page is the starting point: it explains how VFS appointments in Dubai work, what booking actually involves, and links to our detailed step-by-step guides for every country VFS handles from the UAE.

What VFS Global Does (and Does Not Do)

VFS Global is a logistics layer between you and the consulate:

  • It does: collect your application form and supporting documents, take your biometrics (fingerprints and photo), collect visa fees and service charges, and return your passport once a decision is made.
  • It does not: assess or approve your application. Every decision is made by the consulate’s visa officers. VFS staff cannot influence the outcome, which is why a complete, well-prepared file matters more than anything you say at the counter.

Because biometrics are mandatory for Schengen applications, first-time applicants must attend in person; repeat applicants within a 59-month window can often submit through a representative.

How a VFS Appointment in Dubai Works

The flow is nearly identical for every country:

  1. Identify the correct visa type at the consulate’s or VFS’s website before touching the booking system. Short-stay Schengen (Type C), long-stay (Type D), tourist, business and family categories have different document lists and fees.
  2. Create an account on the country’s VFS Global portal (each consulate has a dedicated page under vfsglobal.com). One account per applicant; family members need separate bookings.
  3. Fill in the application form online, then select an appointment slot. Slots for popular destinations open in limited batches — in high season (October–April for Europe) they can disappear within minutes.
  4. Prepare your file: passport valid 3+ months beyond return, UAE residence visa with 3+ months validity, NOC letter from employer or sponsor, bank statements (usually 3–6 months), travel insurance meeting the consulate’s minimum coverage, confirmed bookings. Country-specific lists are in our guides below.
  5. Attend the centre 15 minutes early with your appointment letter, original documents plus one photocopy set. Biometrics are taken on site; fees are paid by card or cash depending on the centre.
  6. Track and collect: you receive a reference number for online tracking, and either collect the passport in person or pay for courier return.

Practical tips from our guides: book 4–6 weeks ahead for Schengen in winter; a “prime time” or courier add-on at checkout is optional and never required for approval; mismatched insurance coverage and unsigned forms are among the most common reasons files are returned unread.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I book a VFS appointment in Dubai? For Schengen applications, the consulate accepts files up to 6 months before travel, but slots for the October–March peak often need booking 4–6 weeks in advance. Turkey, Serbia and other non-Schengen destinations are usually available within 1–2 weeks.

Can I change or cancel a VFS appointment? Yes, through your VFS account, subject to the country’s rescheduling policy — most allow one free change. Repeated no-shows can lock the applicant out of booking for a period set by the consulate.

Do children need their own VFS appointment? Yes. Every applicant, including infants, gets an individual slot; a parent or legal guardian attends and signs on their behalf.

What if there are no slots for my travel date? Check for cancellations early in the morning when slots are released, look at the Abu Dhabi or Sharjah centres for the same consulate, or use the consulate’s emergency-travel procedure if it applies to your case.
